Choosing An Asphalt Shingle

Are you looking for the BEST asphalt shingle for your home?

There are so many shingles companies and styles to choose from and everybody seems to "be the best". We did the research for you to find out what company is actually the best!

Some of the most common factors that are important to a homeowner when buying shingles are:

  • price point

  • true life expectancy

  • wind ratings (rated in mph)

  • colour selection

Although these are great issues I find them not to be the main factors. In our professional opinion some of the more important factors would be:

  • how the shingle is made

  • is it an AR (algae resistant) rated shingle

  • the weight of the material

  • how wide is the nailing strip

  • pitch of the roof the product is installed on

  • what type of warranty does the shingle carry

  • what type of wind rating does it carry

GAF is an award-winning brand. Not only have they won the Innovation Award for asphalt roofing shingles in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, but they also have been rated #1 in shingle quality by homebuilders in the last 9 out of 11 years. They offer an unreachable 50 year limited lifetime warranty that no other company has been able to offer yet! GAF remains to be the only roofing manufacturer that has made any changes to their shingle justifying the stature of the warranty they offer.

GAF provides roofers with training programs to help them understand the best practices for installation, which will ensure superior durability and performance. Their Master Elite certification guarantees that roofers will have a reputation for quality workmanship, are licensed and insured, and have access to GAF’s enhanced warranties.

Homeguard Roofing is GAF certified and master elite!

Malarkey shingles are typically more expensive than other brands. Most of Malarkey’s shingles feature the algae-resistant Scotchgard and its NEX polymer modified asphalt, which is made from recycled materials. While Malarkey may feature high-quality shingles, there aren’t a lot of options to choose from.

One of the biggest cons Malarkey’s has is that limited warranties can only be transferred during the Right Start period, a time frame of five years. Warranties transfers after that period will default to a two-year warranty.

Owens Corning shingles are known for the materials that are used and the process by which they are made. The shingles are layered with: Patented Fiberglas, which protects against the elements, and has a class A fire resistance rating. Their Surenail Technology is a big hit with contractors and helps to ensure your roof is fastened well and withstands high winds.

Although this might sound great, the standard OC shingle warranty says: “Your shingles contain asphalt sealant that requires direct warm sunlight for several days (Thermal Sealing) to seal properly.

This means if your shingles are installed during a period of cold weather which is most of the time here in BC, they may not adequately seal until the weather warms which is an issue.
